Makeup : The things no one ever tells you

Hey Beauties,

Now I know every beauty blogger loves to talk about the best makeup palette they tried this week and so on but no one ever tells you how long you can keep your makeup ( yes sadly it does expire ) or how to keep them clean.

Bacteria :

First things first a quick rule of thumb is creams and liquids harbor bacteria and powders do not. So to keep those Products bacteria free I suggest you use your hand as a palette always apply the foundations or creams or liquid products on your hand then grab it with a brush or sponge from there. This way the bacteria’s from your face are not getting into the products themselves leading to problems later down the road. Now with eyeliners (liquid or cream) and mascara I understand this is hard but my suggestion is to NEVER share eyeliners or mascara with anyone and there are disposable wands of both but its best just to keep those items personal.

Powders don’t harbor bacteria like creams so they are significantly less risk but if you are using clean brushes you should be fine. I skim the top of mine with a tissues and then spritz my shadows with alcohol after I use them (allow to dry before use this is why I do it after) but for personal use this can be done twice a month or so in my opinion without issues.

Now as for how long you should keep them:

  • Liquid and Cream foundations: 2 years.
  • Concealer: 2 years.
  • Face powders: 2 years.
  • Mascara: 4-6 months.
  • Lipstick: 1 year.
  • Lip and eye pencils: 1 year.
  • Eye shadow: 2 years (creams 12-18 months).
  • Sunscreen: 2 years.
  • Blush: 2 years (creams 12-18 months).
  • Eye creams: 6 months.

Face Cream: 1-2 years depending on ingredients the natural and plan based products spoil more quickly then the others.

I hope this helps keep you all safe and save you guys some money.

Xoxo Mandi
